ArtTools Principles of Color Theory

Needs Analysis

In existing curriculum, employees received training on color theory during classroom onboarding. Frontline and senior managers observed that when employees transitioned onto the sales floor, they reverted to using the same colors over and over again, rather than using their color wheel to make custom recommendations. Investigating further, stakeholders discovered that both new and tenured employees tended toward this habit as they deemed it “more likely to result in a sale”.

Training Goal

To give employees an accessible way to review and practice color theory principles in store to build confidence in making customized product suggestions based on clients’ features and needs.

Course Design

To appeal to makeup artists, I wanted to make the overall look of the course very artistry driven. The color definition slides were made engaging with bright splashes of color to click. To illustrate color relationships, I incorporated images taken from both real world design and beauty makeup. Besides knowledge checks, learners have the opportunity to practice putting together looks based on realistic customer scenarios and receive feedback from their manager or trainer.
